Cleaning Out Your Chillum

Of all the smoking pipes and accessories, the chillum is probably the hardest to clean, because you cannot separate the stem from the bowl. However, it is necessary to clean your chillum regularly for it to be able to function properly.

With a toothpick, remove all large smoke resin debris and clumps that got stuck on the chillum bowl. Though this may be quite challenging, it’s better to use smaller objects like toothpicks than knives and paperclips that might scratch the chillum glass. Tap the chillum to dislodge the debris, and then repeat the process until the bowl is clean. Then, pass a pipe cleaner through the body of the chillum to loosen any smoke resin and tobacco pieces. Shake the chillum gently to let the crumbs fall out, and pass the cleaner through the body repeatedly until no more crumbs fall out when you tap the chillum.

Pour isopropyl alcohol into a plastic bowl and submerge your chillum in it for a minimum of two hours. Once two hours are up, remove the chillum and use a pipe cleaner on it once more. You can repeat these processes over and over again to make sure that the chillum is thoroughly cleaned. Once the chillum is spotless, rinse it under running water to get rid of the isopropyl alcohol. Leave the chillum out to dry, and when it is completely dry, you can now use it to smoke again.

Cleaning paraphernalia like pipes and chillums on a regular basis ensures a smoother smoking experience.

Hand carved clay Chillums

A chillum is a traditional method of smoking that has been used for many centuries in India. They are usually made from clay and come with a filter stone, as opposed to a pipe screen like modern smoking accessories.

Chillums come in a range of sizes including small, medium and large and have various spiritual carvings on them from elephants to cobras and peacocks. Each chillum is handmade so there may be slight variations compared to the pictures.

To smoke a chillum simply, hold it upright, making an airtight seal around the base with your hand and inhale through your hand, easy! Be sure not to inhale straight from the chillum because it can get extremely hot.

Shiva also has a range of spare Chillum Stones if you should even loose yours. Each pack contains four chillum stones that will fit any size of chillum.

Traditional Clay Chillum

The origin of a Chillum and what it is used for

A chillum is a conical pipe used to smoke opium, tobacco, cannabis, etc. and is usually made out of a cow’s horn and comes in large and small sizes. It has been used by Jamaican Rastas and Indian Sadhus who believe that smoking with a chillum is much better than cigarette smoking. For Indian Sadhus, a chillum is a ritual pipe used to imbibe charas and Jamaican Rastas use it in reasoning sessions; both groups believe that the ritual smoking facilitates meditation. Generally, the smoke of a chillum is too strong to take alone.

At their rituals, the chillum is prepared with a combination of charas (herbs) and tobacco. Through a Hindu ceremony, the Hindu god Shiva was called upon, the Sadhus believing that Shiva would enter into the smoker. In the ceremony, a wet Safi cloth is used, a stone inserted, and the mixture placed into the chillum. The chillum’s mouth piece is cupped in two hands and forms a closed prism, as the smoker inhales the smoke without the lips touching the pipe. He puffs violently to light the chillum sufficiently to be passed to the person to the right. In the ceremony of the Jamaican Rastas, the chillum used is made of a cow’s horn and wood.

Clay Chillums from Shiva

A chillum is a smoking pipe that originated in India during the 18th century and is used by Hindu Priests (the Sadhu) during their spiritual ceremonies.

Shiva has a large range of clay chillums from small to large and embossed with various patterns including cobras, elephants and the Hindu god Shiva. Each chillum is handmade from clay and comes complete with a filter stone, so there is no need for pipe screens.

To use the chillum, you should hold it upright and make an airtight fist around the bottom of the chillum. Then inhale through your hand; the chillum will get hot so do not place the chillum directly on your lips. Wrapping a damp cloth around the bottom of the chillum will also stop the pipe from getting too hot.
